Media Resistance

The swelling degree of materials in media directly affects sealing performance. Therefore, compatibility between the material and sealing medium shall be prioritized when selecting sealing materials.

Tensile Strength

The tensile strength of sealing materials generally decreases with rising temperature. It is necessary to take into account the maximum operating temperature and mechanical strength under high-temperature conditions. Low tensile strength tends to cause stress relaxation and permanent deformation, resulting in seal failure.

Wear Resistance

Wear resistance is a vital property for dynamic seals. Materials with good wear resistance enjoy longer service life. Wear resistance is closely related to material hardness; generally, higher hardness delivers better wear resistance.

Permanent Deformation

Hydraulic seals achieve sealing effect through recoverable compressive deformation inside the seal groove. Hence, sealing materials are required to feature low permanent deformation, high elasticity and strong resilience. In addition, permanent deformation is temperature-dependent; both low and high temperatures will increase permanent deformation.

Elasticity

Compression seals rely on the resilience generated by compressed materials to realize sealing. Lip seals are prone to eccentricity during operation, and elasticity of the material is needed to compensate insufficient contact stress. Accordingly, elasticity is critical to the sealing performance of seals.

Hardness

Hardness is an important indicator of sealing materials and shall be selected according to the roughness of sealing surfaces. For rough sealing surfaces, lower-hardness seals are preferred for better sealing effect. Seals applied in high-pressure areas need appropriately higher hardness to prevent excessive deformation or even extrusion. Moreover, material hardness declines as operating temperature rises, and higher hardness contributes to superior wear resistance.

Temperature Resistance

The operating temperature of seals depends on medium temperature and temperature rise generated during movement. Temperature exerts a direct impact on sealing performance. Excessively high temperature accelerates material aging, sharply reducing elasticity, hardness and other properties and causing material hardening. Overly low temperature also hardens materials and deprives them of elasticity, deteriorating sealing performance. Consequently, materials with a wide operating temperature range should be selected.
